About Us

The Bride

Born and raised in Melbourne, Sao is a perfect combination of hipster and intellect. From her love of coffee, active wear and cycling to nerding it up in some of the top schools in Melbourne, she represents her city proudly. Eldest of three, Sao has always led the pack, showing her brothers how life should be lived - full of adventure with the ones you love. Whether she is cycling 220kms in a day or running her next marathon, Sao is not short on passion. While her love of family has always kept her close by, her love of optometry led her to Shepparton, a country town that welcomed her with open arms. It was here that she not only discovered a place she wanted to call home but also found the missing piece to her heart – Patrick.

The Groom

Patrick grew up in Mullumbimby, in northern New South Wales. As an adventurous and ingenious child he grew up building potato bazookas, riding motorbikes and terrorising his little sister. Patrick has a strong interest in music which led him to study Music Technology at Griffith University, Queensland Conservatorium. Afterwards he had a stint in Japan, teaching English for two years and is quite fluent in ordering Japanese food. On his return home he did his Masters of Audiology and as a Paediatric Audiologist found his way to Shepparton. His passion also includes building fast cars. His current project being a Honda Civic – if you ask him it’s pretty sick as. He also does kickboxing and running with/after Sao Mai.

Bridesmaid

Lucy Luo

I've known Lucy since high school; but it wasn’t until university that we became really close friends. Her sarcasm and quick wit is really what makes us so compatible – she’s totes amazeballs!

For as long as I have known Lucy I’ve always admired her great sense of style and fashion that seems to come naturally. Lucy is an avid world traveller, is fluent in Chinese and knows a smattering of French. She can cook (just check out her Instagram!) and loves Netflix just a little too much. As Lucy lives in Canberra I always appreciate her making the time to see me for a catch up while on her short trips to Melbourne. When we do, there’s always some form of exercise with the promise of good coffee at the end of it. You can find us at the trendiest cafe possible, always in our active wear- much to my chagrin. Lucy is one of my closest friends and I couldn’t ask for the better bridesmaid by my side."

Nikki Rubinstein

Nikki and I are optometry buddies - we went through the same course at the University of Melbourne. Nowadays Nikki is currently finishing her PhD in developing a new algorithm for perimetry testing – as in, faster and better testing for glaucoma.

So soon she'll be a Dr Rubinstein. Needless to say she is the smart one. She loves reading, singing and watching musicals. We both love a good bargain, which makes us the best shopping buddies. Nikki is often amaze (or jealous) that I can always find a great deal. Being old souls we both share a keen interest in Gilmore Girls, good fitting orthotic shoes and making pancakes. I love Nikki to bits and I am so grateful to have her as a bridesmaid.

Rebecca Yip

I first met Beck at a young professional’s event in Shepparton – However you would not call our relationship anything close to professional! We have travelled to many places around the world, including Thailand, Vietnam, New Zealand and the UK.

I appreciate Beck’s ability to plan our trips down to the very last moment (OCD much?!). Often if there is an open water swimming event taking place, sure enough we would have travelled 100’s of kilometres just to do it. The things we do for a souvenir t-shirt and towel! Beck has been a great supporter of my amateur triathlon career including standing in the sizzling heat or in total downpour of rain, probably in the same day. Beck is an accomplished swimmer herself – Her biggest achievement so far is a 20km solo swim from Fremantle to Rottnest Island (give or take a few km’s due to the pesky sea breeze!). A Shepparton wedding wouldn't be complete without the original Shepp crew and I am honoured that she has agreed to be a part of the bridal party.

Groomsmen

Marcus Wilson

Marcus and I first met each other 28 years ago in kindergarten (that's prep for the Victorians). I immediately thought Marcus was smart as he could spell the word 'log'. Which at three letters long was a whole letter longer than what most others could manage.

The literary achievements continued through to university where he studied journalism at UQ while still managing to party most nights a week at our suburban Brisbane share house. I have many memories of countless music festivals, dodgy nightclubs and seedy basement punk shows which more often than not involved whichever post-punk/hardcore/crunchy-jams ensemble Marcus happened to be playing bass for at the time. Like myself, Marc eventually completed a second (read: useful) university degree and now works as a cinematographer/director/editor in the glamorous film industry. Make sure you tell him what your favourite movie is and why. He will find it really interesting.

Bill Cooney

Bill and I met while studying mutek (that's Music Technology - Queensland Conservatorium). I remember Bill being an extremely dedicated student and always seemed to never have enough work to do. A concept quite foreign to me at the time.

We shared a love of electronic music and eventually wrote and performed together in various guises. Bill is a natural musician and trained in composition, performance, production, pretty much everything. Knowledge of music theory comes in handy, especially when my input always seemed to revolve around 'more bass' or 'epic drop goes here'. After uni Bill and I coincidently both lived and worked in Japan, Bill mastering the language and culture, something I somehow never got around to. Parallels in our lives continued as we both enrolled in post graduate studies at University of Queensland, and both moving to Cairns within a week of each other to pursue our newly chosen careers. Bill now lives happily with his wife Kanae in Far North Queensland teaching high school students Japanese and music. He is still writing and producing his own compositions and develops large theatre shows. His other hobbies include Japanese cooking and enjoying all of that free time teachers have after school. ;)

Andrew Dorian

I first met Andy when I took a job working at a Brisbane cafe. Andy was my supervisor, soon to be manager and also the only other bloke who worked there. Andrew and I would often work the same shifts and play music while we packed up at the end of the day. I can honestly say the 'free' pies, sandwiches and cakes that Andy 'didn't know' I took home everyday probably kept me away from malnutrition during my last 2 years at uni.

I was studying at the Conservatorium at the time, but my real education in music started when Andy took me to my first rave. Having collected underground dance music from the UK and a DJ himself, Andy opened up a whole new world which has shaped my musical tastes to this day. We would often go out all night to various raves and festivals around Brisbane and not get home until the following morning. Now a little more settled down father of two, Andy works the Brisbane Council office making sure the trains run on time and cars...get to work on time?? It's kind of a complex job description I'm not entirely sure of.. Andy is also a huge video game aficionado and owns more consoles and cartridges than an eleven year old Asian kid.
